How does laser hair removal work?
Our Fotona Nd:Yag laser called Fotona XPMAX works by destroying the microscopic blood flow at the base of the hair follicle. It selectively destroys the active hair follicles and thus the hair contained in it. Hair growth go through different phases of growth and depending on their growth cycle some are affected and some are not, that is why a series of laser treatment, up to 6-9 are needed to remove all the hair follicles.
- Early Growth
- Active Growth
- Regression
- Resting
A follicle in an Active Growth phase contains engorged blood flow and will also be affected and destroyed on the day of your treatment. A resting follicle has less blood supply and will not be affected by treatment and this is true for all forms of permanent hair removal.
How is Fotona® laser different than IPL?
Fotona laser is uniquely built with a different kind of patented technologies. The wavelength of Fotona XPMAX laser is 1064 nanometers. This kind of laser technology targets the (hemoglobin) blood supply at the base of hair follicle. The depth of penetration goes to the very deepest follicle and people of all skin colors can be safely treated. Other lasers like IPL with a shorter wavelength target melanin and cause ineffective and patchy hair removal and hypo and hyper- pigmentations. We all have melanin in our skin. Treatments with shorter wavelength lasers result in heat absorbed into the skin, and have a higher incidence of skin reaction and damage like burns.
Fotona laser also has a computerized scanner. The entire hair growth area is scanned with a minimum of 13% overlap so that no hair follicle is missed and the chances of side effects are also minimized. Most other laser hair removal systems are done by free hand. Treatments with our laser require no anesthetics and there is no down time with very low risk of side effects.
Will I be able to wear makeup?
Depending on which procedure is used, makeup may be worn that same day or within 1-2 days.
Are there any side effects or complications of the laser facial?
You should experience no complications from this procedure. In rare cases, transient skin discoloration may occur which is easily treated with topical creams.
How many treatments will I need?
The average person needs six treatments. This will depend on your number of growth cycles and how hair-free you wish to be. Because a hair follicle can only be destroyed in an active "growth cycle" your treatments will be timed to destroy the most hair follicles with each visit. Several sessions (5-10 times) every 4-8 weeks are needed for best results.
How long will it take for me to lose my hair?
A hair follicle that loses its blood supply will take some time to shrivel and die. You will lose your hair in 2 to 3 weeks after your treatment.
Can I pluck or wax my hair between treatments?
No. Plucking or waxing pulls the hair out of the follicle and may disrupt the growth cycle. You may trim or shave as much as you wish between treatments. Shaving does not change the type of hair that you grow. The cost will depend on the area covered, not how thick the hair growth is. Package prices can be arranged if more than one body area is to be treated. An accurate assessment of cost will be determined at your free consultation.
IPL Hair Removal
The flashlamp option, also called IPL hair removal for intense pulsed light, is similar to laser hair removal treatment. IPL also targets dark areas, so works best on people with lighter skin and darker hair. The hair can regrow lighter and thinner. And it's useful to remove hair in large areas such as the back or the legs. It differs by removing unwanted hair by using full-spectrum light - laser removal uses a specific wavelength - and the beam of the flashlamp can cover a larger area than a laser. IPL has grown in popularity because it offers the same results as laser hair removal, but is faster and less expensive. Several sessions (5-10 times) every 4-6 weeks are needed for best results.
